Homestead Exemption – Refunding the Correct Amount

Overview

When a Homestead exemption is applied after a bill has been paid, only the difference caused by the exemption should be refunded.

Correct Procedure

• Keep the original bill marked Paid (do not exonerate the entire bill).

• Issue a negative bill for the Homestead portion only.

• Remove any static fees from the negative bill, since those would have been owed regardless.
