System is Boot Looping
If this happens:
- Cancel or Restart or hit ctrl+alt+del
Typically the machine suddenly shuts off while it was running and windows goes into “I need to repair this now” mode. This can be because of a failed windows update, corrupt file/driver, or a power outage. There are more causes but those are the most common.
After restart, the machine will more than likely ask what you want to do. The reason it is “boot looping” is that it will come to this screen for about 60s and then automatically select whatever is highlighted.
You will want to select, Start Windows Normally, with the arrow keys and hit the enter button. If it continues to reboot on its own, go to #2
Use the repair tools built into windows. These are in the order that you should try the options.
Startup Repair: this is the one button click fix. It scans for corrupt files and does magic in the background. This works occasionally, maybe 30% of the time.
Command Prompt: this can be launched to run a sfc /scannow . in the window just type, sfc /scannow and press enter. After it has done its scan, restart the machine.
This is a great tool for finding and fixing corrupt OS files quickly that may prevent a successful boot. A detailed explanation: “The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files, and replace corrupted files with a cached copy that is located in a compressed folder at %WinDir% System32dllcache. The %WinDir% placeholder represents the Windows operating system For example, C:Windows.”
If this fails, go to #3
- Get the serial number of the machine (service tag), the name of the machine in splashtop, what version of office is used, the point of contact for the site and send all the relevant information back to Operations.
